I’ll Look for You

Losing a brother is like losing part of yourself– part of your childhood, your growing up, your everyday life. You grieve for yourself and for the future without him, but also for those who lost a friend, a teacher, an uncle. My brother Jim died last Monday night of a progressive and fatal lung disease. His decline over the last few weeks was precipitous and heartbreaking. I’m grateful that we shared many intimate and honest moments together, including on his final day. When I told him how much I would miss him, he looked at me and said, “You never know, I might be gone and then be right back with you.” This poem and page came about because of that.

Thank you for your kind thoughts and condolences.

I’ll look for you

In the flock of robins high in the walnut trees,
And in the now dry and curled beech leaves,
In the cold north wind accompanying my walk,
And in the silent spaces across which we talk,
In glistening sun on frosted grass,
And moon shadows glimpsed through evening glass.
I’ll look for you…
Because, who knows,
You might be right here after all,
Beside me.
As you said,
Gone and then right back again.
I’ll look for you.

  33. I am so sorry for your loss. Losing a brother is rough. Thank you for sharing your feelings with your artwork and poetry. This lovely tribute to your brother was a healing salve for me. My brother passed in May, and it is still raw. I think I will paint something too. Thank you for your continued inspiration.

  34. Jean, I am so sorry to hear of the loss of your treasured brother. I hope you will find comfort in the many memories, and feel his presence through whispers in the wind and rustling of leaves. Keeping you in my thoughts.

  35. when my daughter died a few years ago I, I was given some great advise from a friend. She said to talk about her a lot. Use her name in a sentence frequently. That it would help. It has and it has helped me to accept my loss and our family’s loss of someone we love so I much. My condolences. Lovely poem too.

    • Linda– I’m so sorry that you had to experience the loss of your daughter. The only way through grief is to feel it…and so we walk on, carrying it with us, releasing it as best we can, holding close our memories, and living with gratitude for the gifts we have.

  36. So sorry to hear of the loss of your brother. The poem is beautiful and I think of my parents, loved ones who have passed before me and I encounter them in places we used to share together. Perhaps at the beach or on a boat and I think of them. Sometimes, I say their name and a sentence or two.

They all live on in our hearts.

  37. Dear Jean,

I am very sorry for your loss. The poem has a lovely, moving sentiment–thank you for sharing it. I will think of it when reflecting on the many dear relatives and friends who are no longer with me. Wishing you strength at this difficult time.

    Sylvia

  38. Jean, I’m so sorry. I know how hard it is to watch a loved one decline and suffer, having lost my brother-in-law of decades to a quickly progressing neurological disease this year. Your poem is truly beautiful and I find it comforting for my own grief. I’m sending my warmest thoughts to you, Daniel, and all of your family.
